The Nieuport 17 airframe
was built around the 120 hp LeRhone rotary engine.
The sesquiplane layout had proved itself in the Nieuport 11 & 16 (80 hp
& 120 hp motors) The first type 17 appeared at the front in about May 1916 and it
became the mainstay of the French fighter Escadrilles serving well into early 1918.
First examples of the 17 were armed with an over the wing unsynchronized Lewis gun. Mid production aircraft had either twin Lewis guns or a single Lewis and
a single Vickers. Final designs had
single Vickers guns. License built in
Russia and Italy the French sold to America, Belgium and British air services.
This is the Eduard kit
#8024 I added the Eduard aftermarket brass fret 48249 to this build.
I replaced the aileron actuation rods A19-20 with metal rod as well.
The rigging is monofilament. The
personal markings and serials are from the Profi-pack #8033 kit.
This kit represents a Nieuport 17, N.1895 an was flown by one of
France’s Top Aces Lt. Charles
Nungesser of the Esc. N65 during July 1917. Noted
with 45 victories and 17 crashes his record made him the second highest surviving
French pilot of WWI. The Macabre
personal marking was Nungesser’s talisman against death.
He was finally listed (post war) as MIA in Nova Scotia after attempting an
early Trans-Atlantic Fight. His Luck ran
out.
