MOTY Update
The 1st Annual MOTY competition is nearing its end. How are you doing this year? Check out page 4 for the latest and greatest point’s table. Contact Derek Brown for any discrepancies you find.
The Auction Continues
The James McIssac monthly kit auctions are scheduled to continue throughout the summer. Don’t forget to bring your cash and bidding pencils to the May meeting and take a chance on these kits!
Jay wanted as many of his unbuilt kits as possible to go to the members of the chapter. Rather than have members fight tooth and nail over distribution of the kits, we have decided to bring a selection of 72nd and 48th kits to each monthly meeting and hold a silent auction for each set of models. There are approximately 228 72nd scale kits and 109 48th scale kits to be offered. Many of the 72nd kits have photo etch, resin accessories such as interiors, control surfaces, wheels and vac canopies in the boxes with the kits. Some have additional AeroMaster or Eagle Strike decal sets with them (sometimes more than one set in a box). Members may submit written bids during the break for the sets of kits. If members choose to pool their money for a bid on a group of kits they may do so. Kits will be brought to the meetings until they are all gone. Proceeds will go to the club treasury.
We had yet another great turnout (broken record huh?), with over 36 members and guests present, and 20 models to salivate over. Special thanks to Alan Harrison for helping to heal our bodies. The talk was great and ….hold on…..gotta….stretch. AHHHH. That’s better. As I was saying, It was a great program and just goes to show that we can learn something new when it comes to modeling. I want to also thank Alan for extending the offer to do an assessment of club members in return for the donation to the club. (Memo to self – call Alan).
I want to also thank Steve Negley for volunteering to do the next program for May – How To Do Natural Metal Finishes. I wish I could be there to see it, but I will (for sure this time) miss the meeting. I will have Terry take notes of who attends and what models are brought so the MOTY point totals will be accurate. (memo to Guido – don’t even think of slipping Terry a fin for some points – he’s not subject to ill gotten booty. Memo to Terry – I hear Guido is printing funny money in his basement).
Here’s what the gang noted as programs that we would like to see;
June – Gloss Painting: Char Torbett and Alan Harrison
July – Everything you wanted to know about organizing a contest: Cliff Davis, Guido, Buffie
August: ??
September – Slide show or video of NATS: Guido, Buffie, (maybe) Mike McD
Assignment: For May’s meeting it was suggested that during the introductions, the person would give their name, what they like to build, and a count of how many unbuilt models there are in the collection. Since I will not attend – I’ll start.
I’m Derek “Buffie” Brown. I build everything, and I am a 721.
(90 % of these are 1/48 scale. I “saw the light” a few years ago and sold off over 900 kits, mostly 1/72 scale, to pay for house improvements. Now my wife doesn’t complain if I buy a new kit once or twice a month).
So be proud – sound off on the number of unbuilt kits you have in your collection. For the person that has the highest total, there will be a prize. The prize is that the person with the highest kit total must donate a quality kit to the youngest person that attends the next meeting (July). Believe me – you and your significant other will be grateful. Thanks to Ben Fulcher for the great suggestion. Ben – make ‘em pay!
Thanks to Dallas I now have the MOTY gift certificates. Here is an update of the top ten after adjusting for the April meeting and the local shows;
1st: Cliff Davis 218 pts 2nd: Terry Tuytschaevers 195 pts 3rd: Mark Persichetti 186 pts
4th: Alan Harrison 146 pts 5th: Jason Halterman 121 pts 6th: Earl Hosmer 121 pts
7th: Char Torbett 115 pts
8th: Doug DeCounter 103 pts
9th: Al Gonzales 101 pts
10th: Derek Brown 86 pts
There were some big jumps in points – keep those models coming! I will have Shawn run a full 2 page list of points in the July newsletter, so if you think you need to check your point totals, make sure you connect with Terry “King Tut” Tuytschavers at the May meeting or me at the June meeting. He will note the additions and give me the data so that the total are accurate for June. I would like to avoid a last minute squabble about the point totals so whatever is on the July update will be it. The points will then be adjusted based on attendance and new models brought, and the gift certificates will be handed out after the break. Remember to show up to win.
Thanks to Mike Gawell for spreading the word about the HobbyTown show. Hopefully the effort will pay off in terms of getting to know each other’s organizations. We should also send thanks to Terry for attending the Pueblo show – the organizer of the Pueblo museum is working hard to stay in touch with us.
Thanks to Cliff the silent auctions for the kits netted the club $66.00 dollars. Thanks for doing that Cliff. (Memo to Cliff – don’t bring the 1/48 ProModeler kits until June).
I’d like to extend a welcome to the newest member – Felix Jablonski. Thanks for joining. If I failed to note any other new members – my apologies. Let Terry know who you are so I can send you a “welcome”.
Dues will be due in July. Please plan on paying no later than the July meeting since we will be mailing August newsletters only to those that are updated. We will have quite the treasury once the new dews roll in (we could have almost $3,500 in the treasury), which brings up a question: What do we want to do with these funds? Since there is no talk of a mall show this year – what do we want? While I am not for frivolous spending, I do think that we should develop some strategery (always wanted to use that word). One suggestion – take some of the club money and get a permit for the use of a park for a barbecue. The club could pay for one with volleyball net and barbecue grills. We can have the “Tank Men” take on the “Wrench Heads” and “Fly Jockies”. The winners get bragging rights for the year. Let’s also invite our friends at Colpar Hobbies – if we win then we get to dunk Tom with ice water. If we lose, then we get to dunk Guido in ice water. If you think this is a good idea then I’d suggest someone pass a motion in order to get the reservations set up. I vote for a weekend in July but know the good fields book up fast. I’d also like to suggest that the club look to spend $400 to $500 on this in order to get the field, buy some great food for the grills and have a good ole fashion family meet’n, food chew’n, Giudo spike’n fun time. I’d say we’ve earned it!
Afterwards, I’ll even host a get-together at my house for the hard-cores. Since I never seem to complete a model I thought I’d have those over that want to check out some of the built models I have done. (Memo to Guido – stay away from my photo etch) There might even be a poker game working somewhere.
See you at the June meeting. Happy modeling!
MINUTES FOR APRIL 3RD, 2002
President, Derek Brown, called the April 3, 2002 meeting to order at 7:00 PM at Burt Chevrolet with 39 members and guests present.
CORRESPONDENCE:
Cliff Davis had received e-mails from the Colorado Springs IPMS Centennial club and some info on a contest at Colpar Hobbies on June 9th.
TREASURY:
Dallas Lloyd reported a balance of $2705.92 in the treasury of which $736.04 belongs to the contest fund.
OLD BUSINESS:
Derek Brown has decided to wrap up the MOTY program in July instead of August as was originally planned. He will be handing out the gift certificates at the July meeting after a final points tally that evening.
Mike Gawell reported that we received thanks for our club participation at the Hobby Town contest in Lakewood last month.
Mark Persichetti talked about the upcoming shows and contest being held at the Pueblo Air Museum in the upcoming months. They definitely need more participation in those events.
NEW BUSINESS: Carl Barna suggested that we set up a meeting or a gathering some Saturday out at the Platte Valley Airfield. They have a nice collection of World War I aircraft out there and many of our members would enjoy the trip. They also have quite a display of items at Lowry Air Force Base also. Carl and Steve Lawson are looking into setting this up for us.
Derek Brown asked us what we wanted to do for programs over the coming months. The members asked for demonstrations on applying gloss paints, dry brushing, how to apply natural metal finishes, how to rig aircraft and ships, and how to work with resin. Steve Negley stepped up and volunteered to do a quick lesson on how to do natural metal finishes in May, and Alan Harrison will talk about how he manages to get those beautiful finishes on his models in June.
Cliff Davis brought in quite a few models from Jay Mack’s collection, which will be auctioned off in a silent auction. All proceeds from the auction will go into the club funds. He will also be bringing in more in the upcoming months.
Terry Tuytschaevers asked if any of the members would be interested in going to see the vast car collection of Greg Mathews up in Arvada. Many hands were raised and he will try to set this up for sometime this summer.
PROGRAM:
The program for the night was called the Do’s and Don’ts of proper modeling posture. Alan Harrison, Chiropractor, gave us an interesting and informative demonstration of how we should be sitting and what we can do the lesson the amount of stress that many of us feel in our upper bodies when we model over extended periods. Thanks, Alan
