HEAD’S UP!

REVISED MEETING DATE !!!

Attention everyone! The January meeting will be held on January 8 instead of January 1. Please adjust your calendars and join us at Burt Chevrolet on Wednesday, January 8.

THANKYOU!

A big hearty thankyou to everyone who helped out with the newsletter during 2002 by submitting articles, passing along meeting minutes and the monthly "what’s new" column (thanks Terry!), keeping me up to date on activities so that the Calendar of Events isn’t always empty, and submitting any classified ads.

Hopefully everyone is happy with the content of the newsletter and enjoys the new format with the Presentation Calendar and your monthly quotes. Feel free to submit ideas!

This newsletter needs your support every month to keep going and I appreciate every bit of it. Thanks!!

Happy Holiday’s and Happy New Year

to everyone!!

‘Prez’ Deppe

Since this newsletter will arrive before January 1st, allow me to be one of the first to wish all of you a "Happy New Year!" May 2003 be a good year for all of us. Along with my New Year’s greeting, I would like to bring your attention to the change in dates for our January meeting. Our normal first Wednesday fell on New Year’s Day, a conflict with most everybody’s personal plans and the ultimate reality that Burt Chevrolet would be closed anyway. Please not that we will be meeting on January 8th instead of the 1st. Time and place remain the same.

For those of us present at December’s meeting, the "Cutthroat Gift Exchange" came off quite nicely, if a bit tame judged from past year’s experience. Derek’s run at drawing the #1 slot came to an end and our vice president, "Guido" Persichetti, got the pick of the numbers this year – word of honor, there was no fix. Most popular kits were a pair of 1/48 Stukas, a Ferrari, and a "deuce and a half" truck. The dubious honors of the most "victimized" souls go to Doug DeCounter and Mike McDanal.

If by any chance we got the newsletter recounting of "Show-n-Tell" wrong, please forgive us. Our trusty secretary/scribe Terry Tuytshaevers was sick with a sinus infection and Cliff did the best he could as substitute meeting chronicler.

My apologies to Derek Brown for not mentioning at last month’s meeting the fact that his article on scratch building the U.S.S. Texas was featured prominently in the January 2003 issue of "FineScale Modeler". For those of us who were around when he built it, we had the pleasure to see it come together step by step and the final result was, and still it, a sight to be seen.

In the category of paving the road to hell with good intentions, our club purchase of the Alps printer appears to be heading in the direction of a money pit. It is now broken and getting it repaired may be a costly affair with not a very good prognosis for future reliability. David Reinecke and John Holcomb are investigating repair options and cost estimates and should be reporting them to us at January’s meeting. We may have a situation of throwing good money after bad developing here, and although the motion was passed to have your officers make the decision on repairing it or writing it off, I may yet refer it back to a membership vote since it was club vote to purchase the printer in the first place.

Happy New Year once again to one and all and I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. See you on the 8th!

--Tom

IPMS World Modeling Tour 2002 – or the "other Telford"

By Gerry Cole, IPMS #12671

There will be lots of local reports on the trip to Telford this year. After all, 7 of the 21 folks who took the tour organized by Ron Bell and IPMS-Columbus were from the Front Range of Colorado. Yes, we saw Paris, the Normandae area of France, the cities of London and Portsmouth, the "big modeling show" at Telford and most of the aircraft and armor museums in between.

There were other parts of the trip, however, that I particularly enjoyed. Because the majority of those who have taken the IPMS trips have been armor or military aircraft modelers, it is those subjects that get most of the attention. As an auto racing and airliner modeler, I found many other features of the tour rather unexpected and exciting. First off, the French love sports cars. Not just the ones imported into the US, but the neat stuff out of France and Italy that doesn’t meet US emissions standards. I saw examples of all the latest in automotive creations, from dozens of versions of the "Smart" car to exotic Alfa, Lotus, MG and Ferrari models. Most of the major players had "studios" not far from our hotel where one could examine the latest cars one can’t possibly afford, and couldn’t import even if you could. Diecast models were for sale for those who could only dream, but even those were beyond my financial reach. The French also love books and magazines about their cars, and these were available at most large magazine outlets. Neat stuff, these magazines, but heavy to carry back in the luggage.

The Scale Model World 2002 show in Telford (about 20 miles from the Welsh border in northwestern England) was the best model sports car show I’ve ever attended. The Brits love to model race cars, and two stands in particular catered to just about every race car modelers’ needs (but not NASCAR). Marshal Auto and Auto-Sport Models had decals, resin kits and conversion parts from just about every source, including the latest Studio 27 decals at quite reasonable prices. They even had some Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland photo-etched seat belt parts for which I did the master artwork many years ago. This was my first chance to see the full range of Carpena decals for sports cars, oddly enough called "Colorado" decals. They have a wonderful selection of Le Mans Porsche GT1 thru GT3 cars from ’97 thru 2001. Now, if only Tamiya would do a proper 2000/2001 Porsche GT3R kit. The automotive-related portion of the trip was enhanced when we had a rest stop in the Silverstone racecourse area. They had a great race-oriented sportswear store. I now have one official Porsche AG SuperCup hat. I wouldn’t dare WEAR it as it might get wet, but I HAVE it.

I can’t complete this note without mentioning the model airliner turnout at the show. Airliner modeling was very well represented, with perhaps 20% of all the contest entrants and table displays devoted to the subject. The Airliner Modeling Digest (AMD) is Yahoo’s biggest plastic modeling group with over 500 persons subscribed worldwide. It seemed at times like most of them were at Telford. We had airline modelers and vendors from all over Europe, plus both North and South America. I finally had the honor of meeting my personal airline modeling "hero", William Mathews from Portsmouth, UK. Bill used to write a regular airliner modeling column in the original IPMS/UK newsletter from 30+ years ago. He was also one of the judges for the model contest, and is a true gentleman.

While in London at the end of the tour we chanced upon the Motor Books store in the theater district. This is the mother of all automotive specialty bookstores (there are actually two stores, one for automobiles and trains and one exclusively for aircraft). For those who love sports car racing books, I brought home two book that are worth looking for in the US. The first is "Porsche in Le Mans" by groupe C motorsports verlag gmbh (both German and English text). The other is "Alpine au at Le Mans, 1963 – 1995" by Francois Hurel (both French and English text) published by Editions du Palmer. I recommend both of these for their extensive color and b/w photo selection and great reading (in English). The bookstore also had a complete collection of the Le Mans annuals (or at least they did before I arrived). They are also very, very heavy. My wife says one of my arms is now longer than the other.

Was the trip worth the money? Absolutely! The tour buses were always comfortable and the hotel accommodations acceptable. OK, so we hit the dock at Dover with the ferry, but that wasn’t the fault of tour director Lee Forbes. Besides, it was dark and it was a big ferry going into a small dock. Best of all, we were with great couples (7) and individual modelers who had a somewhat common interest – scale modeling or the financing of same. As an example of the benefits of taking the tour, my wife and I spent two extra nights in London at the conclusion at less than $100 a night. The non-tour rate was $275 a night. Overall, it was a great experience regardless of your modeling or prototype interests.

MINUTES FOR DECEMBER 4, 2002

Prez Deppe called the meeting to order at a little after 7:00 with 27 members or guests present.

Chapter contact: Cliff Davis reported that we had received our new chapter charter renewal for 2003.

Chapter treasurer: Dallas Lloyd reported that there was $3352.00 in the kitty with $736.04 of that amount belonging to the contest fund.
Tom D. noted that the January meeting was scheduled for New Year's Day evening and that with the holiday and accompanying football games that Burt Chevrolet would probably be closed. Tom said he would contact Barb Reirson of Burt to see when we could reschedule. ( The meeting will be the second Wednesday [ 8 January] instead of the 1st).

Old business: Cliff reported that he had not yet made inquiries into a memorial plaque for Jay Mack, but would do so previous to the January meeting.

New business: Jack Lassister made a suggestion that we look into either buying ,buying at a discount or seeking the donation of an Iwata airbrush and said a.b. be "rented" out to members for trial usage. Discussion on this included questions of breakage, rental fee, amount of deposit and other items. Mark Persichetti said he would check on the feasibility of such a project. No motion was made at this time.
David Reinecke brought up that the ALPS printer had suffered a seizure and was probably in need of a new print head. John Holcomb said he knew of a dealer who may have ALPS parts and would check it out and report on it the next meeting. Costs of repairs and the reliability of the ALPS was discussed briefly and Bob Nixon moved and Mark Persichetti seconded the motion to have the club officers determine the fate of the dead ALPS.

With the program consisting of the "cut throat" Christmas exchange it was decided to only have those who brought items for show and tell to speak this evening. Doug Decounter had a Marder 3M and an S-Tank that he displayed. Gerry Cole showed us a couple of books and some car decals that he picked up while attending the U.K. nationals in Teleford, England last month. David and Kyle Nelson brought in an ESCI Hs 129 in 48th that Kyle is working on and should have finished next meeting. John Holcomb did a quick "in-box" review of a 48th scale AH-K Skyhawk by Tamiya (I think). David Reinecke showed a 48th Tamiya 4FU-1A that he is building for his dad's Christmas, complete with ALPS decals (before it misfired). Martin Sagara completed his two Airfix projects: a Mustang III and a Spitfire MkV. both in 72nd. Ben Fulcher just finished his Magna (resin) Short Sturgeon and said he didn't think he'd build a second one any time soon. Mike Gawell brought a Dewotine D.520 and a Ki. 45 "Nick" he is finishing up. His son, Justin, brought in a Me. 263 "Komet" he had undertaken as a project, but as it was a really old Testors kit his dad had pushed off on him he didn't have many kind words for it. Justin also showed us a Kawanashi "George" he's also working on. Last but not least, Dale Summers brought in a 1/100th Trumpter L-1011 he's converting to a 500 series a/c and a Mach 2 1/72 "Caravell".

Following a short break we concluded the evening with the gift exchange. Mr. Persichetti drew No. 1 and I am happy to report that this year's exchange went pretty smoothly and that no blood was drawn!

Respectfully submitted,
Cliff Davis
(filling in for Terry T. secretary)

CALL FOR ARTICLES

My cache of articles is running low and I could sure use some new ones: buildups, kit reviews, book reviews, museum reviews, how-to articles, etc. etc. etc. Get those articles written and then either snail mail or e-mail them to me!

I use Windows98 to produce the newsletter so articles via email can be Microsoft Word, plain text, or PDF format. Thanks!

Also, if you have a favorite website, drop me a line and we’ll put it in the Website of the Month section.
