A-4 Skyhawk Update

Earl has graciously sent in an update on the progress of the A-4 Skyhawk project.  Check out page 5 for more information!

Albatros D.Va

For the WWI aircraft fans out there, Steve Lawson has submitted a build-up article on the Albatros D.Va Eduard kit.  The article starts on page 7 for your reading enjoyment.

Buffie’s Page

We had quite a turn out for the meeting, with over 44 members and guests present, and 33 models to salivate over.  Special congrats to Hugh Letterly for winning first place in the “Oldest Model” contest – and we should also note Dallas for taking 2nd and Guido for taking 3rd.  Since I will be gone during the May meeting (not April’s as I thought), those three will have only ONE month to build those models that they won in order to get the $15.00 Colpar gift certificates.  Yep, that’s right….get the all-nighters cranked up and build those models!!

I’d like to say thanks to the new members and guests for attending:  Chris Diaz, Bill Napp, Jack Lassiter, Cjadek Burch, and Steve Negley.  I have asked Shawn to run an updated roster in this month’s newsletter.  I show that we have a whopping 55 members for 2002.  If for some reason your name does not show up on the roster and you are a paid member, my apologies.  Please see me at the next meeting and I will add you to the list.  If you are not on the list – I encourage you to consider joining.  Hopefully there are enough interesting things to entice the new guests to join.

Speaking of the MOTY (modeler of the year) points, there has been a big shift in the order due mainly to those that entered the Springs and the Ft Collins shows.  (Rewarding participation in the local shows was an emphasis in the point system).  Those members in the top ten include:

                1              Mark Persichetti                   184

                2              Cliff Davis                             172

                3              Terry Tuytschaevers           158

                4              Jason Halterman                   134

                5              Earl Hosmer                           121

                6              Doug DeCounter                  103

                7              Alan Harrison                       100

                8              Al Gonzales                           99

                9              Derek Brown                         84

                10            Steve Lawson                       80

I have “re-thunk” the MOTY contest and have decided to stop the point totals as of the July meeting so that the Nationals Contest is only counted once in the totals.  This means that I will be bringing the gift certificates to the July meeting and will bring current the point totals during the break.  I will then announce the First ($150), Second ($100), and Third place ($75) winners and hand out the gift certificates.  We will also draw for the $50 gift certificate for those that qualify as being in the top 50% of the remaining members points-wise.  Just to clarify – from here on out - the “new” models that will count towards the points totals will be those that you must have built during the last 4 months.  While I would still encourage you to bring in the older models so that we can enjoy them, I want to avoid everyone “clearing the shelves” in order to get the quick points.  I will ask Shawn to publish the complete roster of point totals in the June meeting so that you can see where you stand, and help you determine how many models you need to build and bring to July’s meeting.  Keep in mind that presenting a program and sending articles to Shawn for the newsletter are a couple of ways to make fast points.  (Shawn can use the articles)  Also take note of the members that have made it to all the meetings so far and are on track for perfect attendance – Buffie, Cliff Davis, Ben Fulcher, Dallas Lloyd, Mark Persichetti, and David Reinecke.

YOU WILL NEED TO BE PRESENT AT THE JULY MEETING TO WIN THE MOTY GIFT CERTIFICATES.  I thought I would give advance notice now so you can all plan on attending the July meeting.  This will also be the meeting at which the members vote on the next round of officers, so it should be a fun time.  Since I will be absent at the May meeting, I will ask that a motion be passed this month to have Mr. Treasurer Dallas provide me with a check made out to Colpar Hobbies in the amount of $275.00.  This way I won’t have to worry about cutting it close if Dallas cannot make the June meeting.

April’s program will be Allen’s “Do’s and Don’ts of Proper Modeling Posture”.  This should be fun - I feel a cramp coming on right now.  I’m glad I will be there to see it. (The Captain reminded me the cruise is the first week of May)

The feedback was positive on the new Show and Tell format so we’ll stick with it for another few months.  That means that we’ll run through the intros, take a 45 minute break, and then give Allen 45 to 55 minutes or so for his program.

In terms of future programs, I think a discussion of “Contests 101” would be real helpful to bring everyone up to speed on what it takes to put on a regional.  We have many members with local, regional and Nats contest knowledge, and I’ll help organize the discussion.  This should get us better set up to take a run at the regional show in 2004 or a local show in 2003.

I’ll work on trying to arrange some of the tours we talked about last month – stay tuned.

I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting.  Until then – HAPPY MODELING !!

                                        MINUTES FOR MARCH 6, 2002

President, Derek Brown, called the January 6, 2002 meeting to order at 7:05 PM at Burt Chevrolet with 42 members and guests present.

CORRESPONDENCE: Cliff Davis had received flyers concerning various upcoming shows and contests within easy driving distance from Denver.

TREASURY:

Dallas Lloyd reported a balance of $2875.33 in the treasury of which $736.00 belongs to the contest fund.

OLD BUSINESS:

Derek’s modeler of the year program will wrap up in August after the National Convention in Virginia Beach.  Keep On Building.  According to Derek, you must be present at the August meeting to win.

NEW BUSINESS:

Mark Persichetti talked about the possible upcoming regional show and contest in 2004.  Don Kehrer is looking into the hotel availability in the Front Range area right now.

John Trueblood is also talking about doing a local show and contest in the area sometime in 2003.  No dates determined yet but he is already looking into suitable sites.

Mike Gawell reported that Hobbytown USA in Lakewood is holding a contest at their store on the 30th of March.  They are looking for people to help with the contest and to bring in some models.  He also reported that there will not be an open house at Centennial Airport this year, but they are planning some smaller events throughout the year instead.

SHOW & TELL:

Derek Brown initiated a new format for introductions and show and tell.  Going forward, we will mentioned our name and our modeling preferences and leave any discussion about our models until the break session so we could better answer all individual questions.  This sure makes for a shorter show and tell portion, also resulting in no notes about the individual models.  I like it!  There were many models brought in and our tables were quite full.  Very Impressive!

PROGRAM: The program for the night was two fold.  First, we had a quick recap and discussion of the show and contest held in Colorado Springs.  Quite a few of our members made the trip down to the show, and we walked away with a whole bunch of the awards.  Congratulations guys!!  Second, Derek did a quick contest designed to get us to dig out our oldest built model.  Mark Persichetti placed third with his dusty Revell USS Constitution; Dallas Lloyd was second with a Revell 1932 Ford Roadster Hot Rod; and Hugh Letterly was first with a really old wooden model of a submarine.  Derek provided the prizes with the stipulation that all the prizes will be built before the next meeting.  I’ll believe that when I see it.

KEY:       NYS:                                       Not Yet Started

SNF:                                       Started but Not yet Finished

FINISHED:                            completely done, ready for display

NOT PLANNED:                  Not vitally important to overall theme….might be done if space permits, decals can be located, and someone wants to do it.

First the bad news…we had a couple of builders drop out.  This is not at all uncommon with Group projects like this, and there are no hard feelings.  The good news is there are more subjects available if anyone wants them.
